But it may just be that these are “rests” that God has written into the song that is unique for each person. It may seem like these are periods when nothing is happening, we are not moving forward or backwards. God writes the music of our lives, and He includes in that music points of rest. But the point is that although there is no music in a rest, the rest is there for a reason. Composers may include rests of different lengths in their music for different reasons. A Musical LessonĪ “rest” in music is a point at which no music is played, there is only silence. In the wild places we leave behind our everyday cares and concerns and find the quiet to hear the voice of God that speaks to us. We leave behind the noise of our daily lives. We leave behind the material things that may not leave room in our hearts for God. To go out into the wilderness is to leave behind our attachment to our everyday world. To us, that may mean the forests or the lakes or the seashores. To those in the Holy Land, this means the desert. It is also where Jesus fasted for 40 days before beginning His public ministry.ĭifferent translations often render the word “desert,” but wilderness, solitary, lonely and desolate is more accurate. It is where Israel received the law when they left Egypt. In the bible, the wilderness is the place where one encounters God. “John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” John is the herald, calling us to prepare the way for the Lord.

This year, Advent should be especially significant to us as we pause to let our souls catch up to us. This year, perhaps more than any other, has been difficult, to say the least, for so many people. Our world moves very quickly these days, Advent is a time for us to take a moment to rest from what has gone before and to prepare for what lies ahead. “We had been moving so fast,” replied one of them, “that we had to stop and let our souls catch up to us.” The confused archaeologist finally caught up to the guides and asked them why they had stopped. He had pretty much come to a decision when the guides stood up, grabbed their packs, and continued through the jungle leading to the Inca ruin. Or he could go back to the village and try again another time. He could push on ahead without his guides and hope to find the city on his own. The archaeologist began to consider his choices. The guides simply refused to go any further and no amount of cajoling, wheedling, arguing or anger could get them to move. At first the archaeologist thought there must be some obstruction or danger ahead of them but that turned out to not be the case. They trekked through the jungle for what seemed like hours when all of a sudden the native guides stopped, put down their packs and refused to go any further. And so the archaeologist hired some native guides to lead him to the site. It wasn't really lost, the natives in the area knew exactly where it was. Wonderful times.Back in the “golden age” of archaeology (think Indiana Jones,) an archaeologist set off for South america to track down a “lost” Inca city. Can't forget the parts of Maggie! And, Henry! The beaver. Lots and lots of details in this wonderful story. The details of pain, anguish and ways of a Cree woman, young orphaned child and a burly grandfather (always running his hand onto his beard), are a very easy and great read. And though I am a Christian, I absolutely loved the Cree account of the Bear, Fox and Sun. The story is filled with tales of various events, things happy, funny, tragic and wonderful, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading about. Kendra makes a wonderful friend and finds the answers to her questions, then shares with Nonie and Papa-Mac with differently appearing results.

She comes to realize what trapping is and isn't through various events and conclusions. Kendra does not know what to believe but has a nagging feeling what she knows about is missing something.

She returns to school in later years in search of answers to questions she has inside. Kendra faces going to school at a young age while Papa-Mac and Nonie miss her. The earlier part of the book involves the relationships between them which were not necessarily easy to form but they did. Those differences are expressed later in the book. Nonie fills Kendra in on Indian lore and Papa-Mac says that, and the white-man's-God and any other things like that are myths, no truth to any of them. There is Nonie, a Cree Indian woman who tends to Kendra when Papa-Mac runs his trap lines. Kendra, an orphaned four-year-old girl ends up living with her grandfather, George aka Papa-Mac, in the remote far northern wilderness before 1930. Definitely ended too, too soon! It is up there with Seasons of the Heart (by Janette Oke), but it is quite different. THIS has to be one of my absolute favorite books by Janette Oke.
